Crystal Palace appeal Mateta's red card against Tottenham
Crystal Palace have decided to appeal against the direct red card received by their French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta during the match against Tottenham on Saturday in the Premier League, which ended in defeat for the team.
Mateta received a red card in the 13th minute, when the score was still 0-0, after a late challenge on Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven. Referee Michael Oliver initially showed a yellow card before changing his decision to a direct red after reviewing the Video Assistant Referee.
The intervention came after Mateta's foot collided with the top part of van de Ven's ankle, but Crystal Palace believes the contact was unintentional. Information suggests that the 29-year-old French forward thinks he was focused on the ball and did not see Tottenham's defender during the challenge.
Mateta faces a three-match suspension, but Crystal Palace hope to have the red card overturned or the ban reduced, allowing the player to return quickly.
Crystal Palace prepare to face Liverpool this weekend in a match that could impact manager Pierre Sage's long-term future, following a disappointing start to his tenure with the team. Palace currently occupy one of the bottom three positions in the Premier League with 7 points.
