Newcastle United has officially appointed English defender Dan Burn as the team's captain, who will wear the armband permanently starting from the 2026/27 season.

Burn will officially captain Newcastle for the first time in the friendly match scheduled for Sunday against French side Strasbourg, as part of the VisitMalta Weekender.

The English defender had taken on the captaincy in five matches last season, becoming one of the key figures in the leadership group within the first team, before now being honored with the permanent captaincy.

Burn is 34 years old and ranks fourth among the current Newcastle players for appearances with the team. He also has 11 international caps for the England national team, including three matches he played during the World Cup this summer.

The English defender expressed his happiness with the decision, confirming that taking on the captaincy of Newcastle represents a special milestone in his career with the club.

Burn stated: "It is a great honor to be appointed captain of Newcastle United. Representing this club has always been a huge privilege, especially after having the trust to wear the armband on previous occasions, but leading the team on a permanent basis will be something very special."

He added: "It has been an amazing journey since I joined the club four and a half years ago. We have achieved great things together and lived unforgettable moments. I believe there are more achievements waiting for us, and I am excited to take on the responsibility of pushing everyone, day by day, to ensure that happens."

Matthias Jaisle, the head coach of Newcastle United, praised Dan Burn's leadership abilities, considering him the perfect choice to wear the team's armband.

Yasle stated: "Dan is a natural leader, and he is the ideal choice to captain Newcastle United. He puts the team's interests above his own every time he steps onto the pitch, and he shows the utmost commitment in everything he does."

He added: "Off the pitch, he sets an example through the way he conducts himself. Few understand what this club means to the city more than Dan, and this experience will be crucial in helping him guide younger players through this phase of change and adaptation."

Burn is now preparing to embark on his new mission as Newcastle's permanent captain, as the team looks forward to the start of the 2026/27 season with renewed ambitions, relying on the English defender's experience to lead the group both on and off the pitch.
