Paris Saint-Germain considering January move to replace Kvaratskhelia with Nico Williams as serious candidate
Paris Saint-Germain are considering a strong move during the upcoming winter transfer window to compensate for the potential absence of their Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who suffered a serious injury to the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee during the match against Barcelona and could be out until the end of the season.
Spanish newspaper "Sport" reported that the injury may push coach Luis Enrique to expedite his plans to sign a new left winger, as Paris Saint-Germain was already considering strengthening this position during the winter transfer window by acquiring a young player with great potential who fits the team's project.
Paris Saint-Germain have significant financial power to operate in the market after achieving a surplus of €181.4 million during the last summer transfer window, with revenues from player sales amounting to €333.4 million, against an expenditure of €152 million on new signings. This gives them a comfortable financial margin to make new contracts if the coaching staff sees it necessary.
Nico Williams, the Athletic Bilbao winger, is highlighted as one of the top candidates to join the French team, as the "Eurosport" network described him as a "serious candidate", given that Paris Saint-Germain has been following him for several years. The name of Ibrahim Mazah, a Bayer Leverkusen player, has also been linked to Paris Saint-Germain's interest, along with Matiasch Albert, one of the young talents at Borussia Dortmund.
Luis Enrique has expressed a clear desire to change the club's transfer policy since taking charge, focusing on developing young talents within the club while resorting to expensive signings when necessary to strengthen the team. The signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January 2025 for €80 million embodied this policy, as the Georgian contributed to the successes achieved by the team.
Paris Saint-Germain may not rule out making a move before January, benefiting from the 'joker' rule in Ligue 1, which allows the signing of one player from another club in the first or second division during the season, according to the governing conditions. However, the data in the report suggests that the club may prefer to wait until the winter transfer window to finalize its decision regarding the potential replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
