Coppa Italia on the brink of change with an increase in participating teams
Serie A is considering changes to the Coppa Italia format ahead of the new broadcasting rights cycle, with a view to reassessing the competition's structure in the coming seasons, according to "Calcio e Finanza".
Serie A clubs met on Friday, October 16, 2026, to discuss several issues related to the competition, including potential changes to the Coppa Italia system, alongside preparations to auction the broadcasting rights for the upcoming season.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, one of the proposals on the table is to increase the number of clubs participating from Serie C, particularly in the early rounds of the competition, while no changes are expected for the major clubs in the tournament.
The new tender for television broadcasting rights is expected to be announced before the end of the year, after the Italian Competition Authority approved the guidelines for selling rights for the upcoming period, which includes several competitions, including the Coppa Italia. The details of the new system and the final number of teams still need to be officially announced by the league.
