Chelsea move to extend contract of Achimpong amid European interest
Chelsea are looking to renew young defender Josh Achiempong's contract with a long-term deal, in a move aimed at securing his future with the team and ending the interest of several clubs in signing him, including Liverpool, according to TEAMtalk.
Achimponj, aged 20, is highly regarded at Chelsea due to his ability to play as a centre-back and right-back, and coach Xabi Alonso sees him as an important part of his future plans.
Several clubs have shown interest in the player, as Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle, and AFC Bournemouth inquired about his situation during last summer, along with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and SSC Napoli.
Chelsea have previously rejected a proposal from Crystal Palace to include Achiembong in the transfer deal for Maxence Lacroix, indicating the club's determination to retain their young defender.
Achimponj's current contract runs until 2029, but Chelsea want to extend it until 2032, improving his deal in appreciation of his development. Alonso supports this move, given his admiration for the player's potential and versatility in defensive roles.
Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming period as Chelsea aim to retain one of their top academy graduates for many years and strengthen their position against clubs interested in signing him.
