Ceferin announces candidacy for new term as UEFA president
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has announced his intention to run for a fourth term at the helm of the organization, a move that means he will continue in his position beyond the end of his current term.
Ceferin revealed his decision during a UEFA meeting in the German capital, Berlin, after informing the presidents of the 55 national associations and the general secretaries of his desire to run in the upcoming elections.
Ceferin said: "I want to thank the national associations for their trust. We have faced exceptional challenges over the past years, and we have overcome them as one team."
He added: "There is still a lot of work to be done, and that is why I agreed to their request. My ambition remains the same: to maintain the unity of European football, to promote our sport, and to leave UEFA ready for the next generation."
UEFA President said: "I am also deeply grateful to my family. This decision requires a lot from them, and I would not have been able to make it without their understanding and support."
Aleksander Čeferin had previously indicated that he did not wish to run for another term, but he was urged by European federations to reconsider his position, which ultimately led him to change his mind and agree to run for election again.
UEFA has made amendments to its statutes in 2024, allowing Ceferin to run for a fourth term, as the first term was excluded from the count since he took over from Michel Platiny before the end of the latter's term.
UEFA presidential elections are set to take place during the next ordinary conference of the European Union in Astana, Kazakhstan, according to the official schedule of the European Union, with expectations for Ceferin to win a new term until 2031.
