Worrying injury: Marseille defender Cornelius taken to hospital in Canada

Canada's Derick Cornelius, defender for Olympique Marseille, suffered an injury during his national team's training in Toronto, which required him to be taken to a local hospital for medical examinations.

The Canadian Soccer Association has announced that Cornelius suffered an injury "to the lower body" without any contact with another player during training, clarifying that the player is receiving medical care and undergoing further evaluation to determine the nature and severity of the injury.

Cornelius's potential absence represents another blow for Olympique Marseille, especially since the 28-year-old defender has participated in four matches with the team since the start of the season, including three matches in Ligue 1 and one match in the UEFA Europa League, totaling 93 minutes.

Cornelius started against Beşiktaş in the UEFA Europa League before being substituted in the 67th minute. He also came on as a substitute against Strasbourg, Paris FC, and Rennes in Ligue 1.

The Canadian defender has joined Olympique Marseille in the summer of 2024 from Malmö FF, having spent last season on loan at Rangers, where he made 14 appearances, scoring one goal and providing an assist. Cornelius has 48 international caps for Canada, during which he has scored one goal.

The Canadian federation has not yet revealed the final diagnosis of the injury or the player's expected absence, pending further medical examinations.
