Rodri Aims to Make New History with Barcelona
Spanish midfielder Rodri is preparing to start a new chapter with Barcelona, facing a historic challenge to become the second player born in the Spanish capital to win the Champions League with the Catalan club, following Munir El Haddadi.
According to "Mundo Deportivo," Rodri, born in Madrid on June 22, 1996, has become the 17th player from the Madrid region to join Barcelona, a limited list of players throughout the club's history. However, he has the chance to achieve a feat only previously accomplished by Munir El Haddadi.
Munir El Haddadi, born in El Escorial in 1995, became the first Madrid player to win the Champions League with Barcelona after joining the club at the age of 17. He made his first-team debut in 2014 and scored a goal against Elche in a season that ended with the team clinching a treble under Luis Enrique.
The list of players born in Madrid who wore the Barcelona jersey includes prominent names such as Carlos Comamala, Paco Pro, Manolo Claris, Kiki Estebariz, Alfonso Pérez, Pepe Reina, and Marcos Alonso, who won La Liga and the Supercopa de España with the team under the management of Xavi Hernández.
Barcelona's history includes coaches born in Madrid, most notably José Luis Romero, who temporarily led the first team in 1983, and Luis Aragonés, who managed the club during the 1987/1988 season and won the Copa del Rey with them.
Rodri has an impressive record before his transfer to Barcelona, having won the Ballon d'Or, the World Cup, the European Championship, and the Champions League with Manchester City in 2023 after scoring the winning goal in the final against Inter Milan.
Rodri hopes to continue his successful career with Barcelona and achieve a new historic accomplishment, having previously learned Catalan during his time at Villarreal from 2013 to 2018, after progressing through the Atlético Madrid academy.
