Barcelona's Defensive Struggles Highlight Flick's Project Crisis This Season
Tuesday 21-04-2026
The Spanish newspaper "Sport" revealed that Barcelona's main issue this season is the fragility of their defensive system, despite the team's continued ability to score and come back in matches under the leadership of Hans Flick.

According to the report, Barcelona conceded 57 goals in all competitions this season: "30 in La Liga, 20 in the Champions League, 5 in the Copa del Rey, and 2 in the Spanish Super Cup." This figure reflects a clear flaw in the defensive system despite the ongoing competition for the local league title.

The playing style adopted by Flick, based on an advanced defensive line and high pressing, contributed to enhancing the team's offensive strength. However, it also exposed spaces and gaps that opponents repeatedly exploited throughout the season.

The Spanish newspaper pointed out that Barcelona managed to keep a clean sheet in only 12 matches. They fell behind in the scoreline in 10 matches but managed to come back and win 7 of them against Sevilla, Real Madrid, and Real Sociedad. However, they failed to win two matches despite leading against Rayo Vallecano and Girona.

In the UEFA Champions League, the situation was more challenging, as the team conceded goals in 12 consecutive matches without a single clean sheet, which contributed to their struggles in the continental competition. The team recorded 7 wins, 2 draws, and 3 losses in the tournament, conceding 20 goals at an average of 1.7 goals per match.

The report added that Barcelona had to make comebacks in several European matches, achieving three victories after trailing against Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, and Copenhagen. They also won without keeping a clean sheet in encounters against teams like Newcastle, Olympiacos, and Atletico Madrid.

On the other hand, the team either drew or lost in other matches despite conceding the first goal, including losses against Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, as well as a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain after taking the lead.

In the Spanish league, Barcelona conceded 30 goals in 31 matches, with 12 clean sheets. The defensive performance showed a disparity between the goalkeepers, with one conceding 11 goals in 6 matches, while the other conceded 19 goals in 25 matches, maintaining all the clean sheets during this period.

In the King's Cup, the team conceded 5 goals in 5 matches, 4 of which were in the match against Atletico Madrid that determined their elimination, while they kept clean sheets against lower division teams. Additionally, the team conceded two goals in the Spanish Super Cup.

The report emphasized that these figures highlight a clear weakness in Barcelona's project, despite their strong offensive performance, noting that improving defensive solidity has become a necessity if the team wants to compete for major titles in the decisive stages.
