Escalation of the Problem of Goalkeepers Loaned from Barcelona
The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' revealed that Barcelona is facing an increasing issue related to their loaned goalkeepers, as their participation with their current clubs has declined, putting the sports management in front of difficult decisions in the upcoming period.
According to the report, Iñaki Peña, Ander Astralaga, and Yaku, who were key players at the start of their loans, are now sitting on the bench and do not seem likely to continue in their current situation in the next phase.
The report indicated that the sporting director Deco is having difficulty dealing with this issue, especially since all the goalkeepers are under active contracts with the Catalan club, alongside previous plans to sign an additional goalkeeper, at a time when the status of the loaned players has shifted from starters to substitutes.
This season, coach Hans Flick relies on 24-year-old goalkeeper Juan Garcia, who joined in the summer of 2025 and has clearly become the main goalkeeper, alongside 36-year-old goalkeeper Szczesny, whose contract ends in 2027, despite his future not being definitively decided.
Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, aged 33, is also suffering from an injury that will prevent him from participating in the World Cup or at least make his chances weak, while his contract with the club extends until 2028.
On the other hand, young goalkeeper Diego Kochen, aged 20, who has moved between Barcelona Athletic and the first team, has been frequently called up without participating in any official match.
Regarding the loaned players, Iñaki Peña, aged 27, is facing a difficult situation with Elche after losing his starting position in January following a decline in performance and some individual mistakes, although he was the first-choice goalkeeper at the beginning of the season with a contract extending to 2029.
An agreement was also reached in the summer to loan Ander Astralaga, aged 22, to Granada until June 30, with an option to extend until 2028, but he did not gain continuity due to ankle injuries, before returning briefly and then going back to the bench, with expectations of his departure at the end of the season.
As for Aron Yakobshevili, aged 20, he renewed his contract until 2028 and was loaned to Andorra until June 2026, where he was a starter before losing his place due to a technical decision, despite praise for his level within the Catalan club, with expectations of him considering joining the first team during the preparation period for the new season.
