Christensen's Future with Barcelona at Stake
Friday 03-04-2026
FC Barcelona is in a state of anticipation regarding the future of their Danish defender Andreas Christensen, as his contract nears its end and there is an offer to renew it with lower financial terms, coinciding with his imminent return to the field after a long absence due to injury.

According to the Spanish newspaper "Sport," the last two seasons for Christensen have been marked by significant struggles due to injuries. The player notably lacked consistency during coach Hans Flick's tenure. Additionally, his absence last season allowed the club to register Dani Olmo, amid the complex circumstances Barcelona was experiencing at the time.

The newspaper pointed out that the Danish defender's career with the Catalan team was marked by instability, despite his good start under Xavi Hernandez, who played a significant role in signing him. However, injuries hindered his progress and prevented him from securing a place among Flick's options.

Despite his limited appearances, the Spanish newspaper highlighted that Christensen demonstrated his technical value when available, thanks to his strength in aerial duels and his quality in building play. However, his current 2025/2026 season has been disappointing, as he has only scored one goal against Guadalajara in the cup competition.

The report confirmed that Barcelona's management offered the player a contract renewal with a salary significantly lower than the current one, in appreciation of his commitment and professional conduct, with the belief that he can continue to be a valuable asset to the team, despite being among the high-wage bracket since joining for free.

In the same context, the newspaper "Marca" reported that the new offer includes reducing the player's salary to about half, which might lead him to consider leaving for free, especially since he is still capable of signing with a major club on a better contract, despite his stability in Barcelona and his good relationship with Frenkie de Jong's family.

Christensen is also facing expected competition for his position, as Barcelona is interested in signing Alessandro Bastoni. This is in addition to the presence of Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, and Gerard Martin, which could create congestion in the defense line, especially with the possibility of Alvaro Cortes being loaned out.

Regarding his physical condition, Sport clarified that the player suffered a knee injury in mid-December, during which he underwent conservative treatment. He has recently begun a gradual return to training on the field, with expectations of being ready in a few weeks.

Barcelona is awaiting the final decision from Christensen regarding his future, at a time when indications suggest he might soon return to participate. Meanwhile, all scenarios remain open, whether he continues or departs.
