New Amendments to Football Laws During the 2026 World Cup
Thursday 26-03-2026
International press reports have revealed the direction of the International Football Association to introduce new amendments to the game's laws, to be implemented starting from the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, from June 11 to July 19, with the participation of 48 teams for the first time in the tournament's history.

According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, the anticipated amendments include a number of organizational aspects on the field, aimed at speeding up the pace of play and reducing time-wasting during matches.

Among the most notable amendments is granting the substituted player no more than 10 seconds to leave the field, and if this time is exceeded, the substitute is forced to wait for a minute before entering, causing his team to play with a temporary numerical disadvantage. Additionally, only 5 seconds will be renewed for executing throw-ins and goal kicks, and in case of delay, the ball is awarded to the opposing team.

The new laws also stipulate that any player receiving treatment on the field must leave for a minute before returning, unless the injury is due to a foul warranting a card. In a related context, the powers of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be expanded to include reviewing the second warning leading to a dismissal, in addition to some decisions related to corner kicks.

The regulations also emphasize limiting communication with the referee to the team captain only, with the possibility of penalizing any other player who objects or surrounds the referee by receiving a yellow card.

The Egyptian team participates in the previous group of the tournament, where they begin their journey facing Belgium, then New Zealand, before concluding the group stage against Iran.
