Howe: The Most Important Thing is to Implement Our Plan Against Barcelona, and We Have What It Takes to Trouble Them
Tuesday 17-03-2026
Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, spoke about the upcoming clash against Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16, expressing his confidence in his team's ability to achieve a positive result and qualify.

Newcastle enters the match buoyed by a 1-1 draw in the first leg at St James' Park, along with an away win over Chelsea with a 1-0 scoreline at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, which gave the team a morale boost before the decisive encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.

Howe said: "I am very satisfied with the level we showed against Chelsea, and tomorrow's match represents a perfect opportunity to win, and the details will be crucial."

He continued: "We had chances to score goals against Barcelona in the two matches we played, but we haven't won yet, and that is our goal."

He added: "We will try to deliver the same performance we have shown throughout the season, and we hope that the experience of our players will be a significant factor in achieving victory."

The Newcastle coach emphasized: "We have a group of experienced players who have played big matches, and we want the importance of the game to motivate the players to give their best."

He pointed out: "We cannot back down, and the most important thing for me is how to prepare for the match and implement the plan well. There are dangerous players in Barcelona that need to be monitored, but we also have players capable of putting them under pressure and troubling them."

He confirmed: "This might be one of the most distinguished matches in my career, but I don't like to use such descriptions."

He added: "We are currently focusing on preparation and working towards the success of the match plan and individual performance, and all our thoughts are on delivering the best possible match without putting additional pressure on the players."

Howe emphasized: "We must be optimistic, and against Chelsea, we showed what we can offer and defended well. The two matches against Barcelona were strong midfield battles," praising the level of player Pedri.

Howe revealed: "We hope to rely on Sandro Tonali and Joseph Willock during the match. Tonali was suffering from illness, while Willock was substituted due to a muscle injury."

He continued: "On the other hand, Guimarães, Lewis Miley, Fabian Schär, and Emil Krafth will not be available to participate."
