Newcastle Signs Goalkeeper Iwen Jawen on Long-term Contract
Newcastle United has completed the signing of young French goalkeeper Ewann Jaouen from Stade Reims on a long-term contract, as announced today.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper is considered one of the most promising talents in his position, having played 34 matches in the French second division last season, during which he kept a clean sheet in 15 games. He also represented the France Under-21 national team.
Jauvin joined Stade de Reims in the summer of 2023 after beginning his professional career with Guingamp. He then spent the second half of the 2023-2024 season on loan to Rodez, before moving to Dunkirk during the 2024-2025 season, where he helped the team reach the semi-finals of the Coupe de France before losing to Paris Saint-Germain, who later won the title.
Gawain said after signing: "I am very excited to become a Newcastle United player. When I visited the training center, I saw the passion within the club and the work being done here, and I loved the atmosphere from the first moment. I also had the chance to see the stadium, and it is truly amazing and very large."
He added: "I've heard a lot about the fans and that they are the best in the country. The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St. James' Park are well-known in the football world, and I can't wait to experience it myself."
He continued: "As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one-on-one confrontations and love playing in the modern goalkeeper style, participating in building attacks from the back and handling the ball well with my feet. Now, I want to continue developing alongside the players and the coaching staff here, enjoy football, and prove my worth on the field."
For his part, Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe said: "Ewan is a fantastic addition to the team, and I am very pleased to welcome him to Newcastle United. He is a young and talented goalkeeper who has shown great potential during his time in France, and he possesses a calmness and presence beyond his years. We believe he is capable of developing and improving within our environment."
The sporting director, Ross Wilson, said: "We are pleased to welcome Ewen to Newcastle United. We have been working on this deal for several months, and we are happy to complete it. He is a highly talented goalkeeper admired by many European clubs, and he has a promising future ahead. What caught our attention the most during the negotiations was his ambition, focus, and strong desire to join us. We look forward to seeing his development, and we are confident that the club's fans will give him a warm welcome."
