Barcelona Seeks Solution to Individual Pressure Dilemma
Thursday 12-03-2026
The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' revealed that Barcelona continues its search for solutions to deal with the man-to-man pressure style, after the difficulties the team faced in its recent match against Newcastle United.

The newspaper mentioned that this type of pressure caused significant discomfort for the Catalan team during the match, and it has had several precedents this season, including the match where Barcelona suffered a heavy defeat against Sevilla, in addition to the encounter with Paris Saint-Germain, and even the match against Slavia Prague in Prague despite achieving victory, as well as the match against Newcastle in September which was decided thanks to two decisive appearances by Marcus Rashford.

According to the newspaper, opponents' reliance on man-to-man pressure in midfield, three players against three, significantly limits Barcelona's effectiveness, which heavily relies on this area for play-building.

The newspaper also pointed out that the problem worsens when the players are not at their best individual levels, as the match effectively turns into direct individual confrontations across the field, except for the goalkeepers, making it difficult to move the ball out from the back line due to the absence of suitable passing lines.

During the Newcastle match, neither Bernal, Pedri, nor Firmin were able to break free from the tight marking imposed by the English team's midfield trio, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, and Jacob Ramsey, who physically outperformed them in many confrontations.

The newspaper explains that opponents in such cases seek to prevent Barcelona players from turning with the ball, so they don't have to run backward, even if it requires committing fouls, which forces Barcelona's defenders to send long balls towards the attackers who find themselves in direct physical confrontations with the defenders.

One possible solution to this type of pressure is to resort to what can be described as organized chaos, a style implemented by Paris Saint-Germain under the leadership of coach Luis Enrique.

This style relies on moving players and leaving some spaces to attract opponents and open new areas that can be exploited, along with relying more on advancing with the ball instead of passing, and stacking players on one side of the field to create individual confrontations that might favor Barcelona.

The report emphasized the importance of having attackers capable of retaining the ball and passing it quickly, helping midfielders break free from marking and play facing the goal.

It added that when Barcelona succeeded in applying these ideas during the match, which happened on a few occasions, they managed to create opportunities to finish attacks, but they did not exploit them as required.

The report confirmed that although applying this style will be more difficult for opponents at Camp Nou, it is likely that both Sevilla and Newcastle will try to repeat the same plan in upcoming matches.
