Araujo Criticizes Referee's Decision After Newcastle Clash: I Don't Understand the Rules
Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo expressed his astonishment at the decision of Italian referee Marco Guida during Barcelona's match against Newcastle, after he was forced to stay off the field in a moment that preceded the English team's first goal.
Araujo experienced muscle cramps during one of the plays, where the ball ended up out of bounds while he was off the field. He attempted to return to the field bent over to ensure the match wouldn't resume without him, but the referee asked him to start playing from outside the field. Due to his physical condition, the Uruguayan defender couldn't return quickly to cover his defensive area, allowing Harvey Barnes to take advantage and score Newcastle's opening goal, after which Araujo was immediately substituted.
Criticizing the decision, Araujo said: "I don't understand the rules. If I'm suffering from cramps, I can enter the field standing or even crawling, but the referee asked me to leave again, and afterward, I couldn't reach the penalty area. I don't understand the referee's decision."
The Barcelona defender added: "I'm happy with the result because we managed to equalize in the end, but we didn't play at the level we wanted. We must also remember what we learned in the cup match when we beat Atletico Madrid, and today we played smartly. In the Champions League, we must do the same."
Araujo continued: "Now we will play the next match at home among our fans, and it will be a big clash. We wanted to threaten the opponent more and keep the ball longer, but we played against a strong team in a stadium full of fans, and it was a tough match."
The player concluded his statements by saying: "We leave the match with a good feeling because the decision will be on our home ground. Physical exhaustion is natural due to the pressure of high-intensity matches, and with continuity, I feel better. I must always be ready when the opportunity comes, and I felt I was in good shape today."
