Flick's Solutions to Solve the Fullback Problem in Barcelona
Wednesday 04-03-2026
Barcelona is facing a new defensive crisis after the injuries of key full-backs Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde, forcing German coach Hans Flick to reorganize the team's lineup, according to a report by the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo."

Kounde suffered an injury to the back of his leg during the Copa del Rey semi-final match against Atletico Madrid and had to leave the field after ten minutes. Balde came on as a substitute to cover the left side, but he encountered a muscular problem that forced him to withdraw before the end of the match, reducing Flick's defensive options.

These absences come at a crucial time in the season, with important matches in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League against Newcastle United, prompting Flick to redistribute the versatile players, utilizing Joao Cancelo to cover both sides as needed.

1- Specialized full-backs:

Both Cancelo and Gerard Martin can play the specialized full-back position, noting that the right-back has often played as a left-back so far.

2- Repositioning the Center-Back:

Eric Garcia started the season as a right-back against Levante and Mallorca, and Ronald Araujo has also taken on this role in previous seasons when strict defensive coverage was needed.

3- Multi-tasking players:

Flick was forced to redeploy some defensive players and give opportunities to less prominent players, while adjusting the lineup distribution more conservatively during periods of the match that required balance, such as in the case of Casado.

4- Reserve team players:

The options have decreased after Joffrey Torrents' injury, with Guillem Victor and Xavi Espart available on the right, and Duro and Walton on the left.

The report indicated that Barcelona players gave their all in the match against Atletico, finishing the game exhausted on the field while the team's fans continued to cheer after their outstanding performance in the King's Cup. With the upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday at San Mamés, Flick has enough time to conduct experiments and prepare perfectly.
