Barcelona Races Against Time to Benefit from Christensen's Injury
The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo revealed the timeframes available to FC Barcelona to benefit from the salary of Danish defender Andreas Christensen, given his expected long absence due to injury, in order to sign a new player during the winter transfer window.
The newspaper stated that the regulations of the Spanish League Association allow Barcelona to use up to 80% of Christensen's salary if his absence is confirmed for four months, but this is relative depending on the timing of the request submission. Considering the current stage of the season, the actual percentage ranges between 50% and 60%, equivalent to between 5.2 and 6.5 million euros from his total salary of 13 million euros.
The newspaper explained that Barcelona has a deadline of 25 calendar days to submit the request to benefit from this rule to the Spanish League Association, a deadline that ends on January 15. After submitting the request, there is a mandatory waiting period of no less than three days until the medical committee of the association issues its report, making January 18 the earliest possible date to start implementing the decision.
The report added that the Catalan club, after obtaining approval, will have 20 days to complete a new deal using the amount available from Christensen's salary. However, the tight timeframe imposes an additional challenge, especially since the transfer market in Spain officially closes on February 2.
In case Barcelona misses this deadline, the newspaper pointed out that signing will only be possible with a free agent, with a risk related to the inability to register the player in European competitions, as the registration deadline with UEFA is February 5.
The report confirmed that any delay by Barcelona in completing the request procedures will reduce the maneuvering margin available to them in the winter transfer market, with the matter of Christensen's four-month absence remaining the decisive factor in this process.
