Flick: Controlling Matches is the Key to Success, and This is Stegen's Position
Monday 08-12-2025
During the press conference held by FC Barcelona coach Hans Flick, ahead of the highly anticipated match against Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League, the coach addressed several key topics related to the team's performance, preparations, and players.

Flick spoke about controlling matches: "Controlling the match is very important. When we lose the ball, we must quickly transition to defense. If we have confidence and feel connected, we can control the match and the ball, as we saw in the analyses. Just like what happened against Atletico, we were a cohesive and well-connected unit, and this is something we take into account."

He added about monitoring competitors' results: "It’s the same as the previous match. I was in bed and received a message. We want to focus only on ourselves. I don’t want to waste my energy; I want to save it for my team."

He touched on the importance of Gerard Marten: "Sometimes it’s good to have players who love to work, have a positive spirit and high mentality, and give everything they have on the pitch. Gerard always tries to give his best for the club. Playing at Barcelona is a dream for him and we see that. He has confidence in what he can do. He is very useful for us. In this position, the left-sided player gives us additional solutions with the ball, and he performs excellently."

Regarding the return of the Champions League to Spotify Camp Nou, he said: "It was a dream for everyone to return to Spotify Camp Nou. It will also be important in the Champions League. Tomorrow is an important day and we want to deliver our best level."

Concerning the team’s quality and collective improvement, Flick pointed out: "For me, it is important to train many things. I see things in training that I later notice in matches. The quality we have is positive, but we always want to improve. We have the ability to offer more."

About Ter Stegen’s readiness, he said: "He might be ready."

Regarding the differences with Real Madrid and the focus on competitors, he was frank: "We always focus on ourselves and do not look at the competitor. The most important thing now is the Champions League. We know the season is long and that other teams are pushing, like Atletico and Villarreal, so we have to focus only on our matches."

Flick spoke about the improvement the team has witnessed: "Everyone knows what we went through during the past three months with injured players, and we had to manage minutes. In defense, we have only six players in the final minutes. There is fatigue and it is not always easy to maintain a high level. This morning I told them we are fine and more cohesive. They played at a different level than they did a month ago. Koubarsi is only 18 years old and sometimes we forget that. Koubarsi completed 87 passes at 100% accuracy against Betis. I think that is a record in La Liga."

Finally, about facing Eintracht Frankfurt, Flick said: "The Champions League is different. Everything before doesn’t count. Eintracht is an excellent team, young and fast. They know how to adapt to several systems. We have to play at the highest level to get closer to the three points. Their last match wasn’t good, but I know they are capable of creating danger."
