Flick's Astonishing Defensive Substitutions
FC Barcelona is experiencing one of its worst defensive periods in the 21st century after conceding 25 goals in 18 official matches this season, averaging 1.3 goals per game, including 11 goals in the last six matches, according to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
The newspaper explains that Iñigo Martínez's sudden departure, along with numerous injuries in defense and midfield, forced German coach Hans Flick to rely on 11 different defensive back fours. For example, in the match against Athletic Bilbao, he had to exceptionally field Gerard Martin as a left center-back.
The lineup also saw frequent changes in player positions, with Eric Garcia starting the season as the main right-back before moving to center-back and then to defensive midfield. Meanwhile, Balde missed five full matches due to injury, and Christensen was absent for two games because of injury and another two due to illness, which further forced Flick to rotate the squad.
The newspaper points out that the most commonly used defensive formations appeared only three times each, which are:
Eric - Araújo - Cuéllar - Balde against Mallorca, Levante, and Celta Vigo
Kondé, Eric, Cuéllar, and Baldi against Girona, Olympiacos, and Real Madrid.
The defensive formations used by Flick this season were as follows:
1- Eric - Araujo - Cuparsi - Gerard Martin "3 matches"
2- Kondé - Eric - Koubarci - Baldi "3 matches"
3- Kondi - Eric - Coparsi - Gerard "Two Matches"
4- Kondé - Araújo - Cuparsi - Gerard "Two matches"
5- Kondé - Araújo - Eric - Baldé "Two matches"
6- Eric - Araujo - Cuparsi - Baldi "One match"
7- Kondi - Erik - Christensen - Baldi "One Match"
8- Condé - Erik - Christensen - Gerard "One Match"
9 - Kondé - Araújo - Gerard - Balde "One match"
10- Kondé - Koubarcy - Gerard - Baldi "One match"
11- Kondé - Araújo - Cuparci - Baldi "One match"
