Xavi Vilajoana Attacks Barcelona Management and Announces His Candidacy for Club Presidency
Thursday 27-11-2025
Former Barcelona board member Xavi Vilajoana has submitted his preliminary candidacy for the club presidency with a sharp attack on Joan Laporta's management, considering that the way the club was run in recent years was insane.

In his statements, Vilajoana said: "It is a captain sailing without direction, in a project characterized by chaotic management. I see that now, with the elections approaching, he has started to take club members into account, but during these past four years, he ignored them and lacked respect for them."

Vilajoana continued: "It is time to hold the board accountable; this board has turned the club into its private property."

He added: "I have lived Barcelona since my childhood, my father was a board member for 18 years, I played in the club’s academy, played and was nominated as captain of the futsal team, then worked in the offices and with the last three presidents. In total, I have spent 21 years leaving a great impact, providing experience and knowledge, which Barcelona currently lacks."

He went on: "Chaos has replaced a roadmap, and I do not see any of the values that made us great in the club’s management. The member, who talks about Barcelona in the third person, is not listened to, with resignation and also dissatisfaction."

Vilajoana confirmed that if he assumes the club presidency, membership fees will return to previous prices until the club’s stadium is completed, and said: "When there is no budget item for the member, it means you don’t care about them. With us, revenues will increase by 30%." He added: "La Masia is our best asset and must be exported globally, to create players outside Europe through agreements with major teams on other continents."

He continued: "It pains me how the other teams within the club are managed; they are not complementary, they are part of the club and our identity. The construction of the new Palau Blaugrana and Palauet must begin, and resources generated. If I am president, every department will have a women's team, and Barcelona must be a role model."

Vilajoana added: "My goal is to improve Barcelona. I respect the wills; I don’t know what will happen in two weeks, but right now I am sure my project reaches the member. The assembly must be integrative, and this is currently my passion."

Vilajoana said: "Laporta’s management is insane, and if I win and witness any legal violations, I will demand accountability. It is about making the wrongdoer pay. If I win and see illegal matters, they must be clarified. There is no transparent management without that."

Commenting on the team's return to the Spotify Camp Nou stadium, Vilajoana said: "The return has been announced three or four times, which causes frustration and indicates a lack of transparency and a lot of chaos. Three years ago, I said it would not be an easy process; it is a unique process worldwide, but whoever manages it must take that into account and not underestimate a vital project for the club’s economic sustainability and for the members."

He added: "It’s insane. As the person responsible for the construction sector, we worked on safety and good building. I read that the club says it is committed to the contract; this alone is enough. Full responsibility must be assumed because the club’s image is at stake."

Vilajoana explained: "One aspect is leveraging digitization with strong companies, and there are ready plans to increase revenues by 30%, then global La Masia. If you have an agreement with a team in Africa to discover players, they can serve Barcelona at 18 years old without paying a fee, and they can also be sold. Generating resources according to a known working method, replicating La Masia on other continents."

Vilajoana pointed to his administrative legacy, saying: "I was at the club because they invited me. If we talk about legacy, all boards are a legacy from the previous ones. My legacy is professionalizing the futsal department, promoting developmental football, with 9 players now in the first team, and believing in a women’s team that wins the Champions League and becomes the envy of Europe."

Regarding his relationship with Leo Messi, Vilajoana said: "The first to speak should be Laporta. Four years without us is an issue that goes back to Laporta. It seems it was not economic, and if it was, I don’t see that he offered a solution. Messi is the club’s legacy, and there are many ways to manage that. No one should own a legend like Messi; that would be a grave mistake. Everything will come."
