Significant Improvement in Relations Between Barcelona and UEFA
The relationship between FC Barcelona and the European Football Association has seen a significant improvement in recent years, according to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo". The newspaper confirmed that the understanding between Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, and Aleksander Čeferin, the president of UEFA, has contributed to easing tensions between the two parties.
The newspaper pointed out that the booing from Barcelona fans during the Champions League anthem has become less intense compared to the past, after UEFA modified the financial penalty imposed on the club due to the Catalan independence flags at the Berlin final, reducing the fine from 60 million to 15 million euros with a commitment to comply with financial fair play regulations over the next two years.
The newspaper also noted that Barcelona received support from UEFA in its request to play the first match at home in the second round of the Champions League, granting it the possibility to return to Camp Nou if the stadium is ready, even though regulations typically do not allow this.
Furthermore, the newspaper added that the Catalan club contributed to the ongoing dialogue to develop the tournament format, by proposing to establish a home advantage until the semifinals for the first and second in the tournament, a modification that was agreed upon during one of the meetings between Laporta and Čeferin.
