The Spanish Government's Position on Holding the Barcelona vs. Villarreal Match in Miami
Thursday 11-09-2025
The plan to hold the Villarreal vs. Barcelona match in Miami on December 20, as part of the 17th round of La Liga, is at a critical stage, as UEFA will discuss the project today during a meeting of its executive committee in Tirana.

The Minister of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports, Pilar Alegría, expressed her rejection of the idea in her statements, saying: "As a government, I know how to attract international tournaments to my country, so naturally, I want to hold national tournaments within Spain as well. We have wonderful cities, and I support holding national competitions on our land."

La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation have informed FIFA, UEFA, and CONCACAF about holding local matches in international territories, which is permitted under FIFA's amended regulations since April 2024.

However, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin expressed reservations, calling for clear rules to govern these cases.

The European Fans' Association (FSE) and club leaders through the Players' Union (AFE) oppose this project, citing a lack of transparency, while Real Madrid is the only club that has officially announced its rejection among La Liga teams.

In contrast, the project relies on:

Support from Relevent Sports, UEFA's strategic partner responsible for distributing European tournament rights between 2027 and 2030.

Time constraints, which may prevent the plan from being legally overturned, as it complies with FIFA's current regulations.

The ball is now in UEFA's court, and the final decision regarding the Barcelona vs. Villarreal match in Miami is approaching.
