Barcelona vs Real Sociedad Match Could Determine Stadium Until Early 2026
According to the newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," the match between Barcelona and Real Sociedad, scheduled for September 28, could be decisive in determining the stadium that will host the team's matches in the coming months, whether in La Liga or the Champions League, at least until January 2026.
Although the club's primary plan is to return to Spotify Camp Nou, UEFA requires that an official match be held at the stadium before facing Paris Saint-Germain on October 1, to ensure its readiness in terms of infrastructure, safety, and audience capacity, which must not be less than 45,000 seats.
If Barcelona does not obtain the initial occupancy permit from the city municipality by September 14, the match against Valencia will be held at Johan Cruyff Stadium, while the match against Getafe on the 21st of the same month remains under consideration, and it may be played at the same stadium or at Montjuïc Stadium, according to the agreement with the Barcelona municipality.
If the stadium is not ready for the match against Real Sociedad, the club will move to Montjuïc Stadium for both La Liga and Champions League matches as well, because UEFA regulations prohibit changing stadiums during the group stage of the Champions League, which means that the matches against Paris Saint-Germain, Olympiacos, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Copenhagen will be held there.
The newspaper also clarified that Barcelona has not requested any exemptions from UEFA, which suggests that play will continue at Montjuïc until early next year, although some officials within the club still hope to return to Camp Nou soon.
Reports indicated that the combination of Camp Nou and Montjuïc is not on the table even if the stadium reopens in the fall, due to logistical and organizational complexities, although the capacity of Camp Nou could reach 62,000 spectators upon the completion of the second phase of the project.
Barcelona is expected to issue an official statement in the coming period to clarify its final position, especially with fans concerned about the seasonal tickets that have not been obtained this season, unlike usual.
