Barcelona Prepares to Claim Compensation from FIFA

Friday 18-07-2025
The Spanish club Barcelona has become eligible to claim financial compensation from the International Football Federation after their German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered from back pain that could keep him off the pitch for up to four months if he decides to undergo surgery.

According to the FIFA Club Protection Program regulations, the Catalan club is entitled to financial compensation if the player's absence exceeds 28 days due to an injury sustained while representing his national team.

Ter Stegen's injury dates back to his participation with the German national team in the UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal last June.

If the German goalkeeper is absent for four months as expected should he undergo surgery, Barcelona could receive around €2.46 million as compensation from FIFA to alleviate the financial burdens on the club during his injury period.

It is worth noting that Barcelona has previously benefited from the same program in similar cases, most notably the injury of Gavi with the Spanish national team in November 2023, and Ronald Araújo with the Uruguayan national team during the 2024 Copa America.
