Explaining the knockout, promotion and relegation system in the European Nations League

The UEFA Nations League has been expanded with the addition of a new knockout round to be played in March 2025, thus creating continuity between the group stage that ends in November and the finals to be played in June.


The winners of the first and second places in the first-level league (A) groups will qualify for the quarter-finals, which will be held in a home-and-away system, with the winners of these matches qualifying for the semi-finals.


The teams that occupy fourth place from the first-level league groups (A) are relegated to the second-level league (B).


The teams that occupy fourth place are relegated from the groups. The second level league (B) is transferred to the third level league (D).


The two teams with the lowest points in fourth place from the third level league (C) groups are relegated to the fourth level league. (D).


The leaders of the four groups in levels B and C, as well as the leaders of the two groups in level D, will automatically advance to levels A, B and C, respectively.


Promotion and relegation matches:


The third-place holders of level (A) will play against the second-place holders. From Level (B), a playoff match for promotion and relegation with a home-and-away system.


The third-place holders from Level (B) will play against the second-place holders from Level (C), A play-off match for promotion and relegation in a home-and-away system.


There will also be play-off matches for promotion and relegation between the two best teams in fourth place in the (C) League, and the runners-up in the (D) League.
