Netherlands Open Negotiations with Roberto Martinez

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has revealed that the Dutch Football Association has begun talks with 53-year-old Spaniard Roberto Martinez to take over as head coach of the national team, following Ronald Koeman's departure.

According to the report, Nigel de Jong, the Dutch FA's Director of Football, held talks with Martinez in the Spanish city of Malaga, as part of the federation's efforts to finalize the identity of the new coach.

The Dutch Football Association is searching for a successor to Koeman, after attempts to secure contracts with several prominent Dutch names, including Peter Bosz, Arne Slot, and Erik ten Hag.

Roberto Martinez has a wealth of experience at the international level, having managed Belgium from 2016 to 2022 before taking charge of the Portuguese national team in 2023.

The move towards a foreign coach marks a notable shift in the history of the Dutch national team, as no non-Dutch coach has led the team since Austrian Ernst Happel during the 1978 World Cup.

The newspaper noted that Martinez has a strong friendship with Jordi Cruyff, who is one of the coaches influenced by the philosophy of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.

The Dutch Football Association has also held exploratory talks with Michael Reiziger, the coach of the Netherlands U21 team, but no further steps have been taken regarding his appointment.

Louis van Gaal, who has expressed his willingness to return to coaching the national team for the fourth time, has not yet been contacted by the Dutch Football Association, according to the report.

Roberto Martinez began his coaching career at Swansea City, before working in England with Wigan Athletic and Everton, and then transitioned to managing national teams.
