RC Lens fall to Club Brugge with three-goal defeat in the Champions League
RC Lens suffered a heavy defeat against their hosts Club Brugge, losing three goals to nil in the match that took place on Wednesday evening as part of the third round of the group stage in the UEFA Champions League. This marks the second consecutive loss for the French team in the competition, continuing their negative results.
Club Brugge asserted their dominance with goals from Hans Vanaken in stoppage time of the first half, Joakim Maehle in the 50th minute, and Carlos Forbs in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on the chances they had to secure a three-goal victory.
RC Lens started the match positively, threatening the home side's goal on several occasions, but they could not convert their attempts into goals. They received a heavy blow at the end of the first half when Hans Vanaken opened the scoring for Club Brugge.
The match was temporarily halted in the 30th minute due to smoke flares thrown by RC Lens fans onto the pitch and adjacent stands, an incident that affected the flow of the game and interrupted the rhythm of play.
After the match resumed, the French team continued their search for a goal, with Thorgan Hazard coming close to scoring from a free kick in the 13th minute, but goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved his attempt. Moments later, Franjo Ivanović's shot hit the post.
Junior FC came close to scoring, but Club Brugge's defense cleared the ball off the line, before Sommer intervened again to thwart another attempt from the visitors.
Just before half-time, Hans Vanaken capitalised on a rebound from goalkeeper Ruben Lissens, slotting the ball into the net with his left foot in the 2nd minute of added time, giving his team the lead before the break.
With the start of the second half, Club Brugge dealt another blow to their opponent, as Joakim Saïss followed up on a cross from Carlos Forbs in the 50th minute to double the score from the second attempt. In the 72nd minute, Forbs returned to net the third goal after a remarkable individual effort, confirming the Belgian team's superiority until the final whistle.
As a result, RC Lens' tally remains at one win against two defeats, dropping them to 27th place in the overall standings. They must quickly regain their balance to keep their hopes alive for continuing their European journey.
The French team is preparing to face Como on November 4, looking to recover from their losses and return to positive results in the UEFA Champions League.
