Génésio frustrated after new Marseille defeat: we need to progress faster
Bruno Génésio, coach of Olympique Marseille, expressed his frustration after his team lost to Olympiacos by a goal to nil on Thursday evening, in the second round of the UEFA Europa League group stage, marking the French side's sixth defeat in their first eight matches this season.
Olympique Marseille hoped to build on their recent 2-0 victory against Troyes in Ligue 1, but they failed to secure a positive result against Olympiacos, despite showing a convincing performance at times during the match. However, their players squandered important chances and showed signs of physical fatigue in the final minutes.
Bruno said in statements to "Canal Plus" after the match: "We have played eight matches so far, and we have only achieved two victories. It is difficult to repeat the same things almost after every match. It is frustrating, and quite disturbing as well."
The French coach added: "We need to work harder and deliver more. There are explanations for what is happening, but we have been here for four months, my coaching staff and I. We need to progress at a faster pace."
The difficult results reflect the extent of the suffering that Olympique Marseille is experiencing in the 2026-2027 season, after witnessing major changes and austerity policies during the summer that affected the team's roster, which lost several of its elements. This has impacted their ability to achieve the stability and results required.
Timothy Weah, captain of Olympique Marseille, called for positivity despite the loss, emphasizing that the team will continue to work to overcome the current phase. He said: "We will continue with our heads held high. Positive results will come, and we are still very optimistic. We deserved a better result, and we will keep fighting together."
Marseille prepare to face Angers on Sunday in Ligue 1 before meeting Austrian side SK Sturm Graz in the next round of the UEFA Europa League.
