Report: Options Across All Positions - How Flick Can Benefit from Barcelona Players' Versatility?
Hans Flick finds himself facing a clear challenge at the start of the season: replacing the absence of a central striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, who scored 40 goals together last season. However, the German coach has several solutions at his disposal thanks to the versatility of Barcelona's players.
Flick had to rely on Rafinha in the center-forward position, and the Brazilian winger proved his ability to adapt to the new role during the first two rounds of the Spanish league in the 2026/2027 season, having scored three goals.
Raphinha's ability to play in more than one position gives Flick tactical flexibility, which has been evident at the start of the season, as the German coach has resorted to repurposing his players according to the needs of the matches.
Barcelona's solutions are not limited to the attacking front, as they also benefit from the versatility of their players in defense. Eric Garcia has transitioned from center-back to right-back, while Gerard Martin has maintained his position in central defense after starting with the first team as a left-back.
Xavi has transformed Espart from a right-back to a left-back, with the possibility of utilizing him in midfield, in addition to Joao Cancelo, who is capable of playing on both flanks.
Flick has other options in defense, as Koundé can return to center-back, while Christensen has previously played as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, Eric Garcia can operate in the defensive midfield role, and Bryan Fariñas has shown he can play as a right-back when needed.
In the forward line, Flick does not rely solely on Raphinha, as he utilized Firmin and Olmo in advanced positions during the match against Elche. Meanwhile, Adeyemi has the ability to play as a central striker, a role the player confirmed he is ready to take on during his presentation.
Gordon is another option, having previously played as a forward with Newcastle, and he has made a striking start at Barcelona by providing two assists in just six minutes.
Flick also has another option in Egyptian Hamza Abdel Karim, who is a promising striker but needs time and minutes.
Flick excels in managing both abundance and scarcity of options, and this flexibility has been clearly evident at the start of the season. Barcelona has yet to face any issues in terms of scoring, despite the numerous chances missed by Lamine Yamal against Athletic Bilbao.
Thanks to this versatility, Flick has a range of solutions that allow him to compensate for the absence of a traditional striker, without relying on just one player. He retains the ability to repurpose several elements according to the team's needs.
