CONMEBOL President Confirms 2030 World Cup with 64 Teams

Alejandro Dominguez, the president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), has confirmed that the 2030 World Cup will feature 64 teams, marking a special edition to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the tournament, making it the largest in World Cup history.

Dominguez explained that the tournament will feature 16 groups, each consisting of four teams, a system that will lead to an increase in the number of matches compared to the 2026 edition, which will include 48 teams.

This proposal comes as part of the celebration of the centenary of the World Cup, with Spain, Portugal, and Morocco set to host most of the tournament's matches. Meanwhile, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host three opening matches, honoring the countries that hosted the first edition in 1930.

Despite the CONMEBOL President confirming support for a tournament featuring 64 teams, the International Football Federation (FIFA) has yet to officially adopt this system. The proposal is still under review, and no final decision has been made regarding the number of teams participating in the 2030 World Cup.
