Balogun Acknowledges Impact of Suspension Controversy: Belgium Gained Extra Motivation
Folarin Balogun, the striker for the United States national team, acknowledged that the controversy surrounding the decision to lift his suspension before the Round of 16 match against Belgium had a clear impact within the American camp. He emphasized that the issue created an exceptional atmosphere leading up to the match, which ended in a 4-1 defeat for his team.
According to statements reported by French radio "RMC Sport," Folarin Balogun revisited the incident of his red card during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, indicating that he did not expect to receive a red card.
Balogun stated: "It wasn't a violent tackle, so I was very shocked when I was sent off, and you can see that from my reaction. All I could do was accept the decision and try to support my team. When the tackle is unintentional, I don't think it deserves a red card. It was just an unfortunate situation that put us under a lot of pressure."
The American striker addressed the FIFA Disciplinary Committee's decision to lift the suspension, stating: "At first, I was happy to return to the team, but when I started thinking about it, I realized that the decision would spark widespread controversy."
He added: "Some signs of tension have emerged within the team due to the exceptional circumstances surrounding the case, and as the match day approaches, I tried to focus as much as possible despite everything that was going on around it."
He concluded his statements by saying: "It was difficult to deal with all the noise surrounding the case, and we understand that this controversy has given the Belgium national team an extra motivation before our clash."
