US House of Representatives Launches Investigation into Infantino's Ties with Trump

US Congressman Jamie Raskin, the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, has launched an official investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino, demanding documents that reveal the nature of the relationship between FIFA and President Donald Trump and his administration.

Raskin has asked FIFA to deliver all correspondence and documents related to any gifts, payments, or benefits provided to Trump or his close associates, in addition to visitor logs from FIFA's offices in Trump Tower in New York. He also called for Infantino to appear for an official interview to provide his testimony.

This move comes amid growing controversy over the relationship between Infantino and Trump during the 2026 World Cup, where FIFA awarded the American president a new accolade named the "FIFA Peace Award." The duo also faced boos from the crowd during the ceremony celebrating Spain's World Cup title after their victory over Argentina in the final.

The investigation also pointed to allegations regarding Trump's interference in an attempt to lift the suspension of USMNT striker Folarin Balogun before the Round of 16 match against Belgium, a ban that FIFA later revoked, sparking widespread criticism from several federations and national teams.

The investigation is not limited to political relationships but extends to the ticket sales policy for the World Cup, where FIFA faces criticism and investigations due to its dynamic pricing system, which has resulted in significant increases in ticket prices, amid accusations of exploiting fans and engaging in unfair sales practices.

The House of Representatives has granted FIFA a deadline until August 9 to provide the necessary documents and arrange a meeting with Infantino. Meanwhile, the FIFA president continues to enjoy the backing of over 200 national federations ahead of the international federation's presidential elections scheduled for next March, despite opposition from some federations, notably the Norwegian Football Federation, which intends to file an official complaint with FIFA's Ethics Committee regarding Trump's role in the lifting of Balogun's suspension.
