Sebastian Soria Dreams of Breaking a Historic Record in the World Cup

Wednesday 20-05-2026
The forward Sebastián Soria is eagerly awaiting the chance to make history in the World Cup, having been included in Qatar's preliminary squad in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

The 42-year-old player could become the oldest field player (non-goalkeeper position) to participate in the tournament if he is officially called up and plays minutes in the upcoming finals.

Soria began his career in Uruguay with Liverpool Montevideo, before moving to the Middle East in 2004 and settling there. He then obtained Qatari citizenship and started representing the Qatari national team from 2007. The veteran striker played 123 international matches, scoring 40 goals for the Maroon team.

The credit for his return to the national team goes to the Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, who brought him back to the squad after years of absence.

Syria is now attempting to break the record held by Cameroonian Roger Milla, who participated in the 1994 World Cup at the age of 42, while the overall record remains with Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, who played in the 2018 World Cup at the age of 45.

The player expressed his happiness with this opportunity, saying: "I am very happy and trying to enjoy this unique and unexpected moment. I have always dreamed of participating in the World Cup, and this dream has not come true before, so why not now?"

Qatar is expected to begin its journey in the tournament on June 13 as part of Group B, which includes Canada, Switzerland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Syria might make history if it participates in the match.
