Christensen Nears Contract Renewal with Barcelona
The Danish defender Andreas Christensen is closer to continuing with Barcelona, despite not yet reaching a final agreement on renewing his contract, which expires on June 30.
The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' reported that Christensen, who rejected the first offer from the Catalan club weeks ago, is now closer to reaching an agreement with Barcelona's management, after negotiations showed a clear convergence in viewpoints between the two parties.
The club does not rule out the Danish defender signing a new contract extending until June 2028, especially since the player has prioritized Barcelona from the beginning, despite having other financial offers. Christensen and his family feel very comfortable within the club and in the city of Barcelona, which has led him to prefer stability over financial gain.
Injuries have caused a decline in the player's participation over the past two seasons, as he has only played 17 matches this season: 12 in La Liga, 4 in the UEFA Champions League, and one in the Copa del Rey. He started in only one match in the cup against Guadalajara on December 16.
Christensen joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022 from Chelsea on a free transfer, and despite receiving a high salary during the past period, he will receive a significantly lower salary if he continues with the team.
Barcelona and its coach Hans Flick value the player's experience and ability to play in multiple positions, which enhances the club's desire to keep him, provided he meets the criteria set by the sports administration, along with the club's appreciation for his help in dealing with the player registration crisis.
