Koundé: Under Flick's Final Test Before Facing Atlético Madrid
Tuesday 14-04-2026
Barcelona held their final training session at the Metropolitano Stadium ahead of tonight's match against Atletico Madrid, as part of the final preparations for the anticipated game. German coach Hans Flick focused on testing some tactical options.

According to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," Flick dedicated part of the closed training session held before the match to testing a potential lineup. He included Frenchman Jules Koundé in the center-back position alongside Gerard Martin, in an attempt to test this defensive solution before the crucial encounter.

It is noted that Koundé began his career with Barcelona as a central defender upon joining in the summer of 2022, before later being deployed as a right-back, making this experience a potential return to his original role in the backline.

This experiment comes in the absence of defender Pau Koubarsi due to suspension, which forces Flick to look for an alternative in the center-back position. He has several options, including Koundé, Ronald Araújo, or Eric García.

According to the same source, there remains uncertainty about whether this lineup is Flick's final choice for the match or just a test to assess Koundé's readiness in the center-back position, especially after years of playing as a full-back.

Flick also has other options, including deploying Araujo as a central defender with Kounde as a right-back, or relying on Eric Garcia, Gavi, or the returning from injury Frenkie de Jong in midfield alongside Pedri. There is also the possibility of adjusting the attacking line between Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, or Fermín López in advanced positions.
