Behind the Scenes of Asensio's Crisis with Arbeloa
Wednesday 08-04-2026
In recent weeks, Real Madrid has experienced internal tension known in the media as the "Asensio Case." This crisis began quietly within the club on March 11 before escalating later between the player and the team's coach, Álvaro Arbeloa.

The story began when defender Asensio was left out of the starting lineup against Manchester City in the Champions League, a decision that did not sit well with the player, especially since he had made a significant effort to participate three days earlier against Celta Vigo despite suffering from a severe bruise on his neck sustained in the match against Benfica.

Despite his difficult physical condition, the player decided to take the risk and participate in the match at Balaídos alongside Antonio Rüdiger due to the injury crisis in the team's defense, as both Éder Militão and David Alaba were injured, while Dean House was suspended. However, despite this effort, Asensio sat on the bench against Manchester City and did not participate in the match.

The tension between the player and the coach escalated a few days later. After being excluded from the match against Manchester City, Asensio was scheduled to start against Elche. However, on the day of the match itself, before the team's morning warm-up session, he went to Arbeloa's office with a doctor and informed him that he was experiencing mild muscle discomfort and did not feel capable of playing. This upset the coach, especially since the player was already angry about being left out of the City match.

This situation forced Arbeloa to change his plan, as he had to include Rudiger in the match even though the German defender was not initially considered for the game in order to give him rest before the return leg against Manchester City. This decision did not please Rudiger either, who follows a strict regimen in preparing for matches and preferred to stick to the pre-set rest plan due to his physical condition.

The crisis then moved from the coach's office to the locker room, as Asensio was excluded from the squad for the Elche match, then missed the team's trip to Manchester City, and was not included in the derby list, despite training normally with the team every day. The real reason for his absence was his failure to apologize to his teammates after objecting to Arbeloa's decision to exclude him against Manchester City.

Although Asensio offered a personal apology to the coach, Arbeloa insisted that the apology be made in front of the entire team, considering that such situations affect the locker room and are not a personal matter between a player and a coach. During one of the gatherings before the start of training, the coach gave the player the opportunity to apologize by asking if anyone had something to say, but Asensio lowered his head and remained silent, leading to his continued exclusion from match lists.

Over time, rumors began to spread on social media, with some linking the player's absence to his nightlife and claims of his lack of professionalism. This eventually led Asensio to resolve the crisis by deciding to apologize to his teammates in the locker room for what happened with the coach after the City match and for withdrawing before the Elche game.

After issuing an apology, Asensio returned to Real Madrid's squad for the match against Mallorca and was later included in the team list against Bayern Munich, although he did not play any minutes. This effectively closed the chapter on the crisis within the club once and for all.
