Flick: Facing Atletico is Tough, and Racist Chants are Unacceptable
Coach Hans Flick, the manager of Barcelona, confirmed his team's readiness to face Atletico Madrid, emphasizing the quality of the opponents and the importance of focus in the upcoming matches. He also commented on the issue of racist chants that occurred during the Spain vs. Egypt match, stressing the need for respect and inclusivity in football and life.
Flick said about facing Atletico: "No, it's always a tough match against them, and they have one of the best coaches in the world. I love what I see from them and how they play. They have some of the best players in the world like Griezmann. Their players are fantastic, and the atmosphere in their stadium is also great."
He continued: "Yes, it's a match against one of the best teams in the league and in Europe. They have high quality and any player can determine the outcome of the match. It's important that we don't make too many mistakes like in the last match there. I liked today's training, and we still have two very important months ahead of us."
Regarding Lewandowski's absence from the World Cup, Flick added: "He played 90 minutes in both matches, he is very professional, and the idea that he won't play in the World Cup makes you sad, but that's part of life. Now he will focus on what we need from him in the coming weeks."
He also commented on Marcus Rashford's situation: "I have said before that I am satisfied with him. In recent weeks, he faced some physical issues, but now he has a great opportunity. He is like Gavi, who has returned to his form in training."
Regarding La Masia Academy and Barcelona's women's team, Flick said: "There were more than 2,600 players on our fields, and the philosophy of La Masia is wonderful. You can feel it here, how you grow with this philosophy and start living by it. La Masia does a lot of things very well."
He continued: "I greatly enjoyed watching the women's team. I liked what I saw; it's another level. Barcelona played physically, technically, and mentally excellently, dominating the game."
Regarding the Metropolitano Stadium pitch, Flick added: "We talked about it. I told the players they need to be aware of it and perhaps change the type of studs on their boots. They need to be prepared and adapt."
As for the return of the injured players, he said: "The positive news is that we have regained Koundé, Balde, and Eric. Next week, they will be able to start training with the group, but step by step, we have to wait."
In his remarks about racism and the chants against Lamine Yamal, Flick said: "Lamine made a wonderful statement. We are in the world of football for inclusivity. It was disappointing; it's a few people who don't understand this. It's time to reflect and improve, not just in football, but in life. Racism is unacceptable. It's about everyone being together. We all want respect regardless of color, race, or religion. We don't want racism. It's time to change all these ideas."
Regarding Raphinha's injury, he added: "These things happen. He went to Brazil, and we talked via video to help him be calmer and clearer in his mind. We decided he should spend a few days resting with his family. Sometimes you have to make different decisions."
