Laporta: We Must Be Very Superior to Win, and the Negreira Case is a Campaign to Tarnish Barcelona
The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' revealed statements by Joan Laporta, the elected president of FC Barcelona, in which he addressed several prominent issues concerning the club, most notably refereeing, the Negreira case, and the team's future, alongside his stance on Lionel Messi.
Laporta said in his statements: 'I have always felt that we must be very superior to win, because the referees are not in our favor, and here it seems they always help Real Madrid, they have an obsession with Barcelona, and this is clear.'
He continued: 'The Negreira case is not a stain on the club's history, but rather a campaign to tarnish institutional reputation, and fortunately, it did not succeed, and there are interests coming from Madrid behind it.'
He added: 'Every time the case is about to close, Real Madrid presents inconclusive evidence, but the judge is forced to extend the investigation for another six months to prove that he managed the file well.'
He continued: 'They are trying to build a false narrative that referees favor Barcelona instead of Madrid, aiming to tarnish the club's most glorious periods, which started with Rijkaard and continued with Guardiola.'
He added: 'They criticize our hiring of someone who was a vice president, while they have heads of the referees' committee linked to Real Madrid, and they also criticized our hiring of a company where the vice president's son worked, although it was professional work in scouting and refereeing consultancy.'
Regarding his relationship with Florentino Perez, he said: 'I haven't spoken to him for a long time, and since he appeared in the Negreira case, our relationship has deteriorated.'
On the subject of Lionel Messi, Laporta said: 'I had to make a decision, and I believe I was right because the results prove it, as we restored the club's economic balance and formed a competitive team.'
He added: 'Messi was at the end of his career, and a new team had to be built, I wished it could happen with his help, and we tried, but it was not possible.'
He continued: 'The future relationship will be as Messi wants and as Barcelona wants, and at some point, interests will converge again.'
He added: 'Messi is a reference player for an entire generation, like Kubala and Cruyff, and he should have a statue and a tribute match because Barcelona is his home.'
On the comparison between Cruyff and Messi, he said: 'Cruyff was a revolution for our generation, while Messi is art, and in terms of numbers as a top scorer and playmaker, he is unmatched.'
Regarding his relationship with interim president Rafael Yuste, he said: 'He is a friend and was a witness at my wedding, and we talk daily for years, and now we have to wait and stay informed about everything.'
On withdrawing from the Super League project, he said: 'We decided to withdraw due to the lack of purpose, as the project was not progressing, and UEFA started taking steps to improve the sustainability of football in Europe.'
He added: 'What is said about making deals in the Camp Nou box is just myths, and I have not done any business in the Bernabeu box or at Camp Nou.'
Regarding relations with the Spanish League or Real Madrid, he said: 'Human relations and interests change.'
On his victory in the elections against Victor Font, Laporta said: 'It was a sweeping victory, and they deserved it because they played unfairly.'
He added: 'They filed a complaint full of fallacies and made statements that raised doubts, such as talking about signing Haaland.'
Laporta concluded his statements by saying: 'The club members expressed their opinion, and I am grateful to them, and I hope we are given the space to work calmly during the upcoming period.'
