Barcelona Plans to Improve Contracts of Gerard Martin and Marc Bernal
Barcelona is working on modifying and improving the contracts of both Gerard Martin and Marc Bernal, in a move aimed at aligning their terms with their current status within the team, after they have become important elements in coach Hans Flick's lineup.
The Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo' reported that the Catalan club sees the necessity of reconsidering the players' contracts, despite their renewal in 2025, due to the remarkable development they have shown recently.
Gerard Martin's file is more of a priority within the club, as the release clause in his contract amounts to 100 million euros, which is less than the values set for first-class stars in the team, especially with his increasing reliance as a primary option in the left-back position.
Barcelona announced in January 2025 the extension of Martin's contract until 2028, after his previous contract was set to end in June of the same year. This decision came after negotiations that began several months earlier, when the player was carrying the reserve team number, despite already participating in the dynamics of the first team, where he proved himself as a reliable substitute for defender Alejandro Balde.
On his part, Marc Bernal signed a new contract last September extending until 2029, after a long absence due to an injury that lasted a whole year, confirming the club's confidence in his capabilities. His previous contract extended until June 2026, before it was modified to include an additional three optional years.
Barcelona's management set the release clause in Bernal's contract at 500 million euros, alongside improving his salary, which are terms that will be reviewed again, in light of his transformation into a key element within Flick's plans.
This move by Barcelona's management comes as part of its efforts to maintain team stability and enhance its young elements, especially with the increasing reliance of the coaching staff on them during the current season, amidst a busy schedule of local and European events.
