Barcelona Seeks First Clean Sheet in the Champions League
Barcelona continues to struggle defensively in the UEFA Champions League this season, having failed to keep a clean sheet in all their matches in the tournament so far, according to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo."
According to the report, the Catalan team played nine matches in the continental competition, conceding 15 goals, despite successfully qualifying directly for the Round of 16 after finishing fifth in the league stage.
Neither of the team's goalkeepers managed to keep a clean sheet. Juan Garcia participated in several matches, including the St. James' Park games against Newcastle, which ended 2-1 and 1-1, as well as matches against Chelsea (3-0), Eintracht Frankfurt (2-1), Slavia Prague (4-2), and Copenhagen (4-1), without being able to prevent goals. Similarly, Wojciech Szczesny was unable to keep a clean sheet in his matches against Paris Saint-Germain (2-1), Olympiacos (6-1), and Brugge (3-3).
The Spanish newspaper pointed out that these figures contrast with what Juan Garcia offers in other competitions, as he managed to keep a clean sheet in 14 out of 34 appearances, including 11 matches in La Liga, two in the Copa del Rey, and one in the Spanish Super Cup. In contrast, Szczesny did not achieve any clean sheets in nine appearances.
Facing Newcastle this Wednesday evening represents an important opportunity for Barcelona to achieve their first clean sheet in the Champions League this season, which would at least ensure the Catalan team a chance to go to a penalty shootout.
