Laporta Becomes the Second Most Voted President in Barcelona's History
Joan Laporta has become the second most voted president in the history of FC Barcelona after winning the club's presidential elections for 2026, according to the Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo'.
The newspaper explained that Laporta garnered 32,934 votes in the elections held on Sunday, making him the second historically in terms of the number of votes received by any club president, behind former president Sandro Rosell, who recorded the highest number in election history with 35,021 votes during the 2010 elections.
Laporta is set to assume the presidency of FC Barcelona during his term from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2031. Five years ago, Laporta received 30,184 votes when he also won the elections against his rival Victor Font.
According to the report, the number of votes received by Font decreased compared to the previous elections, as he obtained 14,385 votes in the 2026 elections, after having received 16,679 votes in the 2021 elections.
In terms of the percentage of votes, the newspaper indicated that Laporta received 67.93% of the votes in the 2026 elections, a high percentage but less than the percentage achieved by the club's historical president, Josep Lluís Núñez, who won the 1997 elections with 76.31% of the votes when he surpassed his rival Ángel Fernández.
Regarding the voter turnout, 48,480 members cast their votes out of 114,504 members on the electoral register, representing a turnout of 42.34%.
These elections are the fourth highest in terms of the number of participants in the club's history, following the 2010 elections, which saw the participation of 57,088 members, and the 2021 elections, in which 55,611 members participated, including 20,663 postal votes, in addition to the 2003 elections, which recorded the participation of 51,618 members.
In terms of the percentage of participation, it was lower than the 50.42% recorded in the 2021 elections, and the record for participation in the club's democratic election history remains in the 2003 elections with 53.79%, which Laporta also won.
Returning to the voting details in Sunday's elections, 43,282 members cast their votes at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, while 2,223 members voted in Girona, 1,672 members in Tarragona, 741 members in Lleida, and 562 members cast their votes in Andorra la Vella.
