Flick: We Must Not Make Mistakes Against Villarreal, and I Left the Disciplinary Decision to the Leaders
Friday 27-02-2026
German Hans Flick, the coach of Barcelona, spoke at the press conference regarding the match against Villarreal, scheduled to take place at Spotify Camp Nou, as part of the Spanish league competitions, addressing a number of technical and administrative issues within the team.

Flick said at the beginning of the press conference: "If we remember the last match at Villarreal, we were a bit lucky, they had very good transitions, we must not make unnecessary mistakes and play our style."

Regarding the Champions League draw, Flick added: "All matches are important, I don't celebrate not facing Paris Saint-Germain, we must respect the opponent, everyone wants to reach the final, and Newcastle also has a desire to win the Champions League, all competitors are strong."

Regarding De Jong's absence, he confirmed: "We don't like any player to be absent, especially a player of Frenkie's quality, it's not an easy moment, but it also gives other players the opportunity to participate, I focus on the positive side."

On avoiding giants in the draw, he continued: "But do you know against whom we might play? All Champions League teams are very good and have high quality, facing Atletico or Tottenham if we qualify will also be difficult, it's great to have this opportunity, but we must respect all teams."

On the team's improvement, he continued: "These two weeks have been important, but in the end, it depends on how we play in the match and how we face the opponents, even during the international break we have seven matches, and tomorrow is the first opportunity to start well."

On reaching 100 matches and his connection with Laporta, Flick said: "It's a great honor to reach this number of matches, it was a dream for me to coach this club, and I enjoy every day with these players and this club, the presentation was a special event and I decided to attend, there is not much communication between us because he is no longer the president, but I wish him all the best."

Regarding his statistics after the hundredth match, he added: "I never look at statistics, at the end of the season, what matters is to be at the top, I focus on how to improve day by day, this is our job, mine and the technical staff's job, we strive for the players to reach the best version of themselves."

On the physical condition of the team: "If you asked me before the Atletico match I would also say yes, we focus on what we can improve and on our goals, we still have the possibility to develop and continue winning matches, and that is the most important."

On his future with Barcelona, he continued: "Why not? I said it before, I enjoy the city, the team, and the club, it's a great honor to coach Barcelona, and the players are doing a great job, everyone should be proud of this team."

Flick concluded his remarks by talking about penalties for delays and whether he has become less strict: "It has nothing to do with it, I think as a coach I can improve a little, in the past, when I was observing, it was exhausting because I would look at the clock when there were 60 seconds left and think, let's see when they will arrive, this is something I don't like because it also puts pressure on me, so I decided to talk to the leaders and left the decision to them, since then no one has been late, so I think we made the right decision."
