Ter Stegen's Position on Returning to Barcelona After Injury
Barcelona has clarified its stance on the situation of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, confirming that he will not be able to return to the team before the end of the current season, as his loan contract with Girona continues until next June, according to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo."
The newspaper clarified that Barcelona is closely monitoring the health condition of Ter Stegen, who suffered an injury to the hamstring muscles of his left leg while playing with Girona. This injury may require surgical intervention. Although the German goalkeeper is still under contract with Barcelona until 2028, the Catalan club emphasized that the loan agreement cannot be contractually terminated.
According to the newspaper, Barcelona's management believes that the loan will remain valid until the end of the season, which means that Ter Stegen will be at the disposal of Girona's coach once he recovers, not under Hans Flick's leadership. At the same time, the Catalan club does not rule out the possibility that the goalkeeper might spend part of his rehabilitation program within the facilities of the sports city, as has happened previously with other loaned players.
The report indicated that federal regulations prevent Ter Stegen from returning to Barcelona during the current season, as he was officially registered as a Girona player since January 25. This makes re-registering him with Barcelona impossible according to the Spanish Football Federation's regulations, which do not consider injuries as a case of force majeure.
Thus, Barcelona reaffirms its full commitment to the agreement made with Girona, both in terms of contractual aspects and financial obligations, while simultaneously continuing to monitor the player's health status as he is considered an asset of the club.
