Munuera Montero Explains the Reason for Frenkie de Jong's Direct Red Card
Monday 12-01-2026
José Luis Munuera Montero, the referee of the Spanish Super Cup final, revealed the reasons behind the direct red card shown to Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the match against Real Madrid, which ended with the Catalan club winning the title despite finishing the game with ten players.

According to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," Munuera Montero explained in his refereeing report that De Jong was sent off for using excessive force during a challenge on French star Kylian Mbappé in the 90+2 minute, while contesting the ball, without any intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The newspaper added that since the ball was in play, the expected penalty is a one-match suspension for the Dutch player, based on Article 121 of the disciplinary regulations of the Spanish Football Federation, which pertains to direct red card offenses.

The newspaper pointed out that this penalty will be enforced in Barcelona's next match, meaning De Jong will miss the Copa del Rey game against Racing Santander, but will be available to play in the following league match against Real Sociedad.
