Barcelona Opens the Door for Ter Stegen's Loan in January
Thursday 01-01-2026
FC Barcelona is considering facilitating the departure of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen during the winter transfer window, due to changes in his role within the team and his desire to secure playing time that would allow him to maintain his chances of participating in the upcoming World Cup, according to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

The newspaper explained that Barcelona's management, in coordination with coach Hans Flick, has decided on the identity of the starting goalkeeper, relying on Juan Garcia, despite Ter Stegen's full recovery from the back surgery he underwent last July and his participation in the cup match against Guadalajara.

According to the newspaper, Ter Stegen faces two clear options: either to look for a club that will give him regular playing time, as the German national team's coaching staff has emphasized the need for his consistent participation to be part of the 2026 World Cup, or to stay at Barcelona and accept a secondary role.

Despite the high salary of the German goalkeeper, Barcelona has shown willingness to offer financial concessions to facilitate his loan move in January, covering a large portion of his wages. In this context, the newspaper noted that Girona is actively pursuing the signing of Ter Stegen, especially after their coach Michel praised the goalkeeper's abilities in recent days.

The newspaper explained that Girona can only afford about one million euros for the player's salary. However, Barcelona does not object to his transfer to the Catalan club, considering that the move will give him an opportunity to return to playing and put himself back in the competition. His final future is expected to be decided next summer.
