Caicedo Considers Retirement After Teammate's Death
Wednesday 24-12-2025
Ecuadorian striker Felipe Caicedo, currently playing for Barcelona Sporting Club and a former Manchester City star, is considering retiring from football altogether after the profound shock he experienced following the death of his teammate Mario Pineida in a shooting incident that shook the sports community in Ecuador.

Mario Pineida was killed on December 17, 2025, in the northern part of Guayaquil, after being shot. The incident also resulted in the death of a woman who was with him and the injury of his mother, sparking a wave of sadness and anger within the Ecuadorian sports community.

Caicedo, 37 years old, expressed his deep emotional impact from the incident, stating in a press interview that what happened to his colleague left a profound psychological effect on him. He said, "I am likely to retire; I don't feel like continuing. What happened has made me not want to think about football right now," adding that his final decision may be made in the near future.

This consideration of retirement comes after a difficult season for the player, who returned to the field in 2025 with Barcelona SC of Ecuador. However, he only played in 20 matches and scored 3 goals, affected by injuries and limited playing time, noting that his contract with the club expires in December 2025.

It is worth mentioning that Felipe Caicedo has had a long career in European football, having played for prominent clubs such as Manchester City, Lazio, Inter Milan, Espanyol, Malaga, and Levante. He is also considered one of the most outstanding strikers in the history of the Ecuadorian national team.
