Barcelona Includes Pau Torres Among Candidates to Strengthen Defense
The Spanish newspaper "Sport" reported that FC Barcelona continues its search for a left-sided central defender to strengthen its defense following the departure of Iñigo Martínez, leaving a gap alongside Pau Cubarsí. Despite the impressive performances of Gerard Martín in this position, the club is still looking for a player capable of providing solutions in the short and medium term.
The newspaper confirmed that Pau Torres, Aston Villa's defender, has become one of the players closely monitored by the Catalan club. Barcelona had previously considered signing him when he was playing for Villarreal, before he transferred to Aston Villa for around 40 million.
The club understands that negotiations will not be easy given Torres's importance in coach Unai Emery's plans, but the Spanish player may be willing to return to Spain if Barcelona makes an official decision to sign him.
Alongside Torres, Nico Schlotterbeck remains one of the options considered to strengthen the left center-back position, with his annual salary expected to be around 14 to 15 million euros. Borussia Dortmund may agree to his transfer for approximately 50 million euros, noting that his contract runs until 2027.
The newspaper pointed out that Barcelona needs to address issues related to financial fair play before any deal, especially with the summer transfer window approaching. It is also monitoring the status of players like Lewandowski and Christensen, whose contracts expire at the end of the current season, as well as Ronald Araújo, who is currently away from the team, in order to determine the club's priorities both sportingly and financially.
