Gerard Martin: I Watch My Teammates to Adapt, and Facing Inter Was a Turning Point
Monday 08-12-2025
Defender Gerard Martin, a player for FC Barcelona, expressed his comfort playing as a center-back and the importance of winning against Eintracht Frankfurt to maintain Barcelona's position in the Champions League, during the press conference before the match to be held at Spotify Camp Nou.

Martin said: "I have played several years in a five-defender line, and as a center-back it is important to be able to build play, this is one of the fundamental aspects."

He added: "Coach Hans Flick wanted to test me in this position during the preseason, and I accepted the challenge. On the day I was supposed to play, he asked me if I was ready, and I answered yes."

He continued: "I feel comfortable in the center-back position, and I am also good as a full-back. The coach will decide where I will play."

Martin explained the difference between the two positions: "As a full-back, you have to push forward more, while as a center-back you need to be more attentive in one-on-one duels. We are improving as you have seen in recent matches."

He added: "I watched our defenders to help me adapt, and I praise Inigo Martinez who was an excellent captain last season. I looked at some footage of him to see how he behaved."

Regarding the upcoming match, Martin said: "We are in good shape and want to keep improving. We cannot afford to lose more points in the Champions League; we must win and be at the top."

He continued: "Playing at Spotify Camp Nou is always motivating, and in the Champions League we have an extra point and we are very excited."

About the league race and Real Madrid’s recent defeat, he said: "I watched the match; it doesn’t mean much. A few rounds ago, we were behind them. It’s better to have a margin, but there are teams pressing like Villarreal."

He added: "I don’t know if we are the favorites for the title. We have to win all possible matches to maintain the advantage."

Martin confirmed he is going through a special period on a personal level, saying: "I feel important in the team and the coach shows that by trusting me. I am now in the center-back role, but I don’t feel more settled here compared to full-back. I will play wherever the coach decides."

Martin concluded by referring to the previous experience he had against Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final: "It was a turning point. Szczesny tried to encourage me and told me to look at where I was two years ago. He told me to be happy and keep my head up. I saw some things on social media but I don’t know where they came from. I consider myself a humble and hardworking young man."
