Lamine Yamal: Barcelona's Young Star Focuses on Team and Enjoyment
Monday 01-12-2025
The Spanish newspaper "Sport" confirmed that rising star Lamine Yamal, a Barcelona player, continues to prove himself at a record pace. He recently gave an interview to the famous CBS American program "60 Minutes," where he talked about his career and his responsibilities as a young player in the first team.

Yamal spoke about being a star at Barcelona: "No, honestly, I love it, but my priority is always the collective interest of the team. I have never been a player who goes onto the field saying I want to score four goals. I want people to enjoy themselves and for me to enjoy playing with my teammates. If I score many goals, that's even better, but football is about more than that."

He added: "My goal is not to break all the records or score a million goals, but to enjoy myself and inspire children to want to be like me. I want to change people's day—if someone is feeling sad, they can come to the match and go home happier than they were before."

Regarding his playing style, Yamal continued: "Whenever I face three defenders, I don't think they will take the ball from me, even though that often happens. I always try to challenge because that's my style, and it wouldn't be the same if I gave up the ball every time two or three defenders come at me. I think about resolving the situation in the best possible way."

He added: "If I were a fullback, I wouldn't mind that. If a better player consistently outperforms me, I would ask him to slow down; otherwise, my friends would make memes about it."

Regarding the comparison with Lionel Messi, Yamal said: "I respect him for what he has achieved and what he represents in football. If we ever meet on the field, there will be mutual respect. He is the best in history, and we both know that I don't want to be Messi, and he knows that too. I want to follow my own path."

He added, "I was influenced by him in my childhood because he was different; he was more of a playmaker than a dribbler, and my goals have always been for the team to succeed before my personal interests."

Regarding being a star from an early age, Yamal continued: "I don't care about the criticism. I would respond to them like this: If you had a job and they asked you if you wanted to be the manager, would you say yes or no? Do I act quickly? That is my answer."

He continued: "But being a star prevents me from living a normal life as an 18-year-old teenager. I try to simplify my life as much as possible, like playing video games, visiting my mom, or spending time with my brother, but I don't think I'll ever be a typical teenager."

Yamal continued by talking about the influence of his mother and her support for him, saying: "My mother helps me stay humble, she is the one who makes the decisions, and the number of goals doesn't matter to her. I am happy with that."

He continued: "My childhood in the poor Rocafonda neighborhood was impactful. I felt great happiness when people stood up just because of what I did on the field, and I remember that every time I play in front of the crowds."

Regarding the pressure of being a potential team leader, he said: "It's psychological; I haven't felt it and never will because I haven't faced it. I am confident that I am capable of achieving what I want."

He affirmed: "This is my personality and it helps me not to give up. I have never gone to sleep feeling depressed or sad. I always tell myself that tomorrow will be another day. I will go to training, do my best, and the weekend will go well."

Finally, Yamal spoke about his choice to play for the Spanish national team: "I am Spanish, which is why I chose a team that aims to win everything. I will arrive at the World Cup in my best form, and I believe Spain will be a strong team for a long time. I am excited to play in the tournament."
